<p>Von Emanuel Lasker ging schon zu Lebzeiten eine besondere Faszination aus, war es doch keinem anderen Schachmeister vergönnt, 27 Jahre lang den Weltmeister-Titel inne zu haben. Hinzu kam, was vielleicht noch wichtiger war, Laskers persönliche Ausstrahlung, sein Wirken als Schachschriftsteller und Philosoph. Die Leuchtkraft seines Sterns scheint bis heute unvermindert.</p>

<p><strong>Robert Hübner</strong>, bekannt für seine profunden Schachanalysen und geschliffenen Kommentare, widmet sich in dem vorliegenden Buch einem besonderen Aspekt in Laskers Schaffen: seinen zahlreichen Wettkämpfen gegen andere Schachmeister, wobei der Schwerpunkt, wie im Titel angezeigt, zwar auf dem Weltmeisterschaftskampf gegen Wilhelm Steinitz 1894 liegt, aber auch eine Reihe anderer Wettkämpfe Laskers, sowohl zuvor sowie (in zwei Fällen) späteren Datums, eingehend betrachtet werden. <br>Diese späteren Wettkämpfe sind die Titelverteidigung gegen Carl Schlechter 1910 und – nun in der 2. Auflage dieses Werkes hinzukommend – ein Wettkampf gegen Dawid Janowski im Mai 1909.</p>
