Das Ulmer und Neu-Ulmer Schachleben ist ungewöhnlich vielseitig. Viele Schachspieler spielen aktiv in Mannschaften und treffen sich an Vereinsabenden, manche begegnen sich an einschlägigen Orten wie z. B. dem Karlsplatz oder dem Café Omar. Die Vielseitigkeit des Ulmer Schachlebens ist wohlnur wenigen Menschen bewusst.
Es besteht nicht nur aus Schachpartien, sondern aus Vereinen und Abteilungen, Turnieren, Zeitungen, Kunstwerken, Sammlungen, vor allem natürlich den Menschen, die all das erst ermöglichen.
Die Geschichte des organsierten Schachlebens ist höchstens partiell bekannt, da die Vereinschroniken nur die Geschichte des eigenen Vereins wiederspiegeln und innerhalb der Vereine kaum eingesehen werden.
Doch die gesamte Ulmer und Neu-Ulmer Schachgeschichte gleicht einer wahren Schatztruhe gefüllt mit Dokumenten, Erfahrungen und Ideen, die für die Zukunft wichtig und lehrreich sind. Um diese Schätze zu finden, wurden zahlreiche Zeitzeugen aus den verschiedenen Vereinen befragt,gesammelte Zeitungsartikel, Vereinschroniken und weitere Dokumente ausgewertet. Der größte Teil des Werkes beschreibt die Geschichte der Schachvereine. Sie untergliedert sich in drei Teile.

Der erste Teil beschreibt die Zeit von 1885 bis 1952, als von den heute existierenden Schachvereinen nur einer existierte, der damalige Schachverein Ulm/Neu-Ulm. Dass es in dieser Epoche zeitenweise auch andere Vereine gab, war bei der Herausgabe der ersten und zweiten Ausgabe dieses Werks noch nicht bekannt.

Der zweite Teil beschreibt die Entstehung des aktuellen Vereinsgefüges (Stand 2015) in den Jahren von 1952 bis 1985. Der dritte Teil beschreibt die Zeit danach.
