David Hooper/Ken Whyld:
The Oxford Companion to Chess
[2530]

1984, 407 Seiten, Leinen mit Schutzumschlag, englisch

The Oxford Companion to Chess embraces all branches of the game, including over-the-board play, correspondence and telegraph chess, problems, and the various unorthodox variants of the game.

The historical coverage ranges from the earliest myths describing the games invention to the stages leading to the World Championships in the early 80s. About 570 biographical entries include all the major figures of the game's evolution: apart from writers and composers they include all the world champions up to Kasparov and every other player since 1872 who achieved the equivalent of one GM norm.
But these biographies are far from dry lists; many extraordinary figures are brought to life in them. More than 200 games are given, 650 entries are given to describing named openings and their variations, and over 2000 entries cover playing and problem terminology, automatons, computer chess and the representation of chess in painting, literature, film and the theatre.
